Larry L Hood, Ph.D.
American Food Safety Services (AFSS), a division of Technical and Business Services, is licensed by the SQF Institute as a Training and Consulting Center and is based in central NJ. It was founded by and is under the leadership of Dr. Larry L Hood.
Education: Dr. Hood is a graduate of the University of Illinois. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University with specializations in food microbiology (pathogenic species), thermal processing, and food chemistry (protein structure and function).
Dr. Hood is a licensed SQF Institute Consultant and Trainer for 20 conventional and high risk categories; is accredited by the International HACCP Alliance as a Lead Instructor; is a Lead Instructor accredited to teach the FSMA Preventive Controls Qualified Individual workshop and other FSMA required training, is a proctor for the National Environmental Health Associations HACCP Certification Exam and is an OSHA trainer.
AFSS serves clients in the North American food supply chain from primary production to manufacture and distribution of food and food contact packaging. This includes meat products, seafood, beverages, confections, processed food, baked goods, dairy products, fresh produce, egg product processing, shell eggs, prepared meals (commissaries), food ingredients, nutritional supplements, primary production of food products (farming), and manufacture of animal feed and pet food in addition to other categories. Dr. Hood has over 30 years of diversified experience, including technical, food safety and quality, general management and line assignments within the food and beverage manufacturing and ingredient supplier sectors. These have included branded organizations including Quaker Oats, Continental Baking, Johnson & Johnson, Inc., Celanese-America and S.C. Johnson (Diversey).
Dr. Hood has more than 30 publications and patents dealing with food science, regulatory affairs, and food safety.
He has been actively involved with helping North American companies implement the Safe Quality Food standard since 2005.
He is among the first registered SQF Institute Trainers and Consultants in North America, helped write the first SQF Code and Code updates, has served as a member on several SQFI committees, including the Technical Committee and has assisted the SQF Institute with training of auditors.
Dr. Hood has trained over 4000 individuals in food safety, such as HACCP, SQF, Internal Audits, Food Safety Preventive Controls for Human Food, and consulted with and helped over 350 companies achieve GFSI Certification and food safety and HACCP Certification.
